Attractions to Discover in Strathcona County

Beaver Hills Biosphere

Located in the south east corner of Sherwood Park, AB and extending east of Elk Island National Park. The Beaver Hills is an extensively treed, upland area consisting of rolling to hummocky terrain rich in native wetlands and aspen dominated Boreal mixed wood forest habitat.

Bike Skills and Skateboard Parks

This park includes a variety of natural features including dirt ramps, rock boulders and logs. Together, these features create a variety of ladder bridges, a wall ride and various sized dirt jumps to appeal to all ages and skill levels.

Cooking Lake-Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area

The 97 square kilometre Cooking Lake-Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area contains forests, pastures and wetlands. It is a multiple use area that supports a variety of activities, including agriculture, wildlife management, natural gas extraction and outdoor recreation.

Elk Island National Park

Just 35 minutes east of Edmonton lies a natural wonderland open all year long! In addition to being an important refuge for bison, elk and more than 250 bird species, Elk Island National Park is also an oasis of calm for day picnickers and overnight campers alike.

Ministik Lake Bird Sanctuary

Ministik is located in a designated Important Bird Area, and borders the Ministik Bird Sanctuary. There are many wetlands at this natural area, which are important for filtering water and maintaining our water supply.

North Cooking Lake Natural Area

 The area’s topography provides important wildlife habitat. Ponds ringed with cattails and willow are nesting and feeding habitat for red-winged blackbirds. Many types of waterfowl, including blue-winged teal and northern shoveler, use the ponds.
