We are sad to announce that after organizing the Sherwood Park Parade for the past twenty years we have made the difficult decision not to facilitate this community event any longer. The Sherwood Park Parade was organized by another non-profit organization until 2000 and was associated with Medieval Days. When that organization announced that they would not be organizing the parade any longer, the chamber board agreed to host it short term and try to find a group that would take it over permanently. Over the years we have contacted several organizations, yet we have been unsuccessful in finding one to take on this event. The parade has grown over the years, and we were immensely proud to have so many participants but also blessed with huge crowds lining the streets to celebrate Canada Day with us. Unfortunately, our success coupled with the many recent incidents at other parades in Canada and the United States has significantly increased the risks associated with parades and the onus on the event organizers. During the parade, the safety of residents and participants was our primary responsibility and always has been our focus. This decision was not made lightly but the costs of physical infrastructure, insurance and security obligations have now grown beyond our capabilities when considering all the monetary and volunteer requirements. The Chamber of Commerce would like to sincerely thank every sponsor, volunteer and spectator that participated in the parade over the years and wish everyone our best this Canada Day and into the future!
